Nigeria sends more medical tourists to India than any other African country. Bengaluru and Chennai hospitals have dedicated Nigerian patient coordinators, Yoruba and Igbo interpreters, and halal food options. Here is everything you need to know before you travel.
Nigeria is a Yellow Fever endemic country. Indian immigration requires a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) β the yellow card β on arrival. Without it, you will be quarantined for 6 days at your own expense. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. Your GoMed coordinator sends a reminder 3 weeks before departure and confirms your certificate is valid.
Nigerian nationals can apply for an Indian e-Medical Visa online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Processing takes 24β72 hours. You need a valid passport (6+ months validity), a passport photo, a letter from the treating hospital confirming your appointment, and a bank statement. Up to 2 family members can travel on Medical Attendant Visas. Your GoMed coordinator provides the hospital invitation letter.
Narayana Health Bengaluru and Apollo Hospitals Chennai have the largest Nigerian patient populations. Both have dedicated African patient coordinators and halal food options. Manipal Hospitals Bengaluru is also popular for orthopaedic and oncology cases. All three are JCI-accredited. GoMed has active partnerships with all three and can negotiate priority appointment slots.
The most common routes are Lagos (LOS) to Bengaluru (BLR) via Dubai (Emirates, 14β16 hours total) or via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines, 13β15 hours). Direct flights do not exist. Business class is recommended for post-operative return travel β your coordinator can advise on airline medical clearance requirements for flying after surgery.
Bengaluru has a large Nigerian expat community, particularly around Koramangala and Indiranagar. Halal restaurants are widely available. Your coordinator arranges serviced apartments near the hospital at affordable rates. The city is English-speaking, making daily navigation straightforward for Nigerian patients.
